Suvarna Raj is an international para-athlete, social worker, and accessibility specialist who has dedicated her life to advocating for the rights and empowerment of people with disabilities, with a special focus on women. She is also a committed social activist working to make India more accessible and inclusive for all.
Suvarna discovered her passion for sports at a young age, starting with powerlifting before transitioning to athletics, where she truly excelled. She has proudly represented India in several prestigious international events, including the Asian Para Games (2014 in Korea, 2018 in Indonesia, and 2022 in China), bringing attention to the potential and determination of para-athletes.
Beyond her sporting achievements, Suvarna has been at the forefront of several initiatives for disability rights and accessibility. She plays a key role in the Accessible India Campaign launched by the Government of India, conducting access audits of public and private infrastructure to ensure compliance with accessibility standards. To date, she has audited over 500 buildings and continues to work tirelessly toward creating barrier-free spaces.
Additionally, Suvarna serves as the Brand Ambassador for the Election Commission of India in her city, where she advocates for the inclusion of people with disabilities in the electoral process. She has worked to ensure that polling stations are fully accessible and encourages persons with disabilities (Divyangs) to actively participate in the democratic process.
Suvarna’s contributions have been widely recognized both nationally and internationally. She has been honored with numerous awards, including:
- National Award by the Hon. President of India in 2014
- National Youth Award by the MoYAS, Govt of India 2015
- Prestigious UN SDG Action Award 2024 in Rome, Italy, for her exceptional work in promoting inclusion, accessibility, and social impact.
- NDTV Indian of the Year 2024
- NCPEDP Universal Design Award in 2017
